It’s almost time; Tomorrow Joost Klein (26) will represent the Netherlands in the semi-finals of the Eurovision Song Contest. Rehearsals are therefore already in full swing and this afternoon Joost had his first ‘dress rehearsal’, where the press was able to see his full act for the first time.

“It really lacks a total feeling”

In Malmö it was time for the first this afternoon dress rehearsal of the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest. This is also the first opportunity for the press to see the acts from the seventeen countries. While last week we had to make do with photos and a short video, we have now been able to see Joost Klein’s entire act.

We can’t really call Joost’s act a moon landing. During the rehearsal we see how Joost enters the arena together with his friends Stuntkabouter and Appie Musa and two dancers. In addition to a slick dance, the chopping and of course the blue bird, the animations on the screens stand out. Images of different European cities, meals and other craziness follow each other in rapid succession. Yet the big surprise is not forthcoming.

Joost seems to focus on public participation. For example, part of the song’s lyrics appear on the wall behind him and he looks for a ‘hey!’ of the public. Will the entire room say ‘hey!’ on Thursday evening? or even chant ‘welcome to Europe, boy’? We shall see. At the end of Joost’s act is the emotional part of his song. Joost has chosen to display the English translation as subtitles, so that the message is also better received in foreign living rooms.

“It really lacks a total feeling,” says Eurovision expert Aran Bade. “There are all kinds of separate elements that you see on stage. Maybe it will become a whole on TV, but here in the hall there is so much happening that you cannot comprehend it all at once.” According to Aran, the hardcore part is the best part of the act. “The heel part in the middle, that is actually the strongest for the Netherlands. And of course the ending. I am curious what will happen now at the bookmakers.”

After his first rehearsal footage it became clear that Joost would be on stage with a blue bird, but that was not exactly appreciated by the bookmakers. Joost dropped from third to sixth place. Aran previously spoke to Joost about his act:

To keep people busy, Joost shared a series of mysterious photos about his act on social media last Tuesday. “Trust the process,” he wrote. It remains to be seen whether Joost will reach the final. But if we have to believe Joost, then we have to ‘trust the process’.
