Who is Cheeseball Man? That question is on the lips of countless New Yorkers after the masked man ate an entire jar of cheeseballs on Saturday, drawing hundreds of onlookers to Union Square. “It’s the hero we need,” his fans said after he popped the last cheese snack into his mouth in front of the cheering crowd.

Cheeseball man (22) did not want his action to go unnoticed and had covered New York City with posters announcing his bizarre stunt. “I decided to do this because I think New York needs this,” the anonymous twenty-something said The New York Post. “Cheeseballs are funny and eating a whole jar is difficult, but not impossible.”

And he proved that on Saturday in front of his frenzied audience. “I’m allergic to gluten,” he warned – even though cheeseballs do not contain gluten – before he opened the large jar, dropped some on the floor and then started stuffing the balls into his mouth, while the spectators “eat those balls on” chanted.

Bigger pot

“At one point I thought I was going to throw up,” Cheeseball-man said in the American media. “But everyone kept shouting at me to keep them in, so I did.” After half an hour he devoured the last balls and the spectators went crazy so much that the screams could still be heard two streets away.

The masked Cheeseball man is extremely popular on social media after his stunt. Videos from Saturday have been viewed, shared and commented on countless times. “And people say that New Yorkers have no culture,” he said. “He has become the hero we need, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a statue soon.”

Cheeseball Man wants to eat another big pot next year and he suspects that he has become so popular because “everyone wants to be behind this mask”. But he says he wants to be more than just a culinary warrior. Cheeseball man also wants to help his fellow citizens and be a good example for all New Yorkers: “I clean the streets and also pick up litter and such.” As befits a real hero, that is.
