Unexpected twist in Married at first sight: which couples stay married? | Show

--

With videoAfter weeks full of firsts, such as living together and getting married, it’s over for the couples Married at first sight. The balance was taken up on Wednesday evening in a final conversation with experts and presenter Carlo Boszhard. Which lovebirds see a future together and who will hand in their rings? And which couple turns out not to have reached the finish line after all? NB: this article contains spoilers. Don’t want to know the results? Then read no further.

David and Kim: divorced

Stormy might be the best description for David and Kim’s wedding. A real spark didn’t fly, but give up? The two actually didn’t want that. During the couples weekend, things eventually went wrong: David and Kim slept in separate rooms and later Kim made it clear that as far as she was concerned, the marriage was over. David looked defeated during the final interview. “What has not been said in the past six weeks will now come out,” he predicted. They both put on the sackcloth, but there were also painful revelations. For example, David stated that he had been “walking on eggshells” from “the first day of marriage” and “sometimes felt like a leper” around Kim. She felt that David portrayed her as the culprit. Viewers could already guess: the duo wanted a divorce and therefore handed in their rings to the experts.

Bastiaan and Suzanne: divorced

It soon became clear that Bastiaan and Suzanne were not a match. But instead of saying goodbye to each other prematurely, they decided to persevere and make the best of it together. Last week’s episode showed that they had each other’s initials tattooed on their bodies. So the two will truly be remembered for each other forever. But of course it comes as no surprise that Bastiaan and Suzanne wanted to hand in their rings. During the final conversation, the two looked back positively on their adventure. “It’s of course a shame that it just didn’t work out, but I really enjoyed experiencing this,” Suzanne said. Bastiaan is now happy in love again, he said later in the episode.

Erik and Gerben: divorced

Well, no, well, no. While Gerben wanted nothing more than to give 100 percent to their marriage, Erik insisted again and again that he wanted to ‘take it easy’. And that raised questions for Gerben, who stated that he felt an enormous distance between him and Erik. There was definitely a click between the men, which also became clear during their honeymoon in Lapland, where they had a lot of fun together. “But in love I immediately felt that something was wrong,” Gerben told the experts on Wednesday evening. How sincere was Erik actually? And hadn’t he been putting on a play all this time? Lots of questions that Gerben had.

Once Erik was called in and heard about his husband’s doubts, he said he was ‘frightened’. “I notice that I care about you. I always think about you too,” he tried to reassure Gerben. But she still had little hope for a good outcome. During the vows it became clear that Gerben did not want to remain married. Erik, on the other hand, did not want to hand in the rings and saw a future. But Gerben was unrelenting: “Unfortunately I have now come to a point where I have to choose for myself. My decision is therefore to divorce you.”

In conversation with Veronica Superguide Erik tells him about his dating life Married at first sight was on the back burner. If it were up to him, that would soon change. Could he have done things differently? Certainly, says Erik. “If I had known how I came across on screen, I wouldn’t have done it that way. If I had it to do over again, I might have protected him (Gerben, ed.) less out of the goodness of my heart. Then I would have simply said on camera that his insecurities were a major blockage to a possible relationship. Then the image people had of me might have been very different.”

Jerney and Jeffrey: divorced

It looked promising: the budding love between Jerney and Jeffrey. The two seemed very fond of each other, had a romantic holiday and the viewers did not see any real setbacks. The two decided to stay married and even had plans to move in together. Jerney would, when the time was right, move in with Jeffrey with her sons. But before that dream of the future could become reality, their relationship collapsed. Jerney missed affection from Jeffrey and craved good conversations. When she pointed this out, Jeffrey revealed that he did not want to continue with her. “I wanted to bring that up and didn’t expect that someone else would close the door on it so quickly. That makes you think,” says Jerney. According to Jeffrey, someone who can give ‘more resistance’ suits him better. “Yes, then the total picture is just not there.”

Jeppe and Jantine: married

This season’s success couple: Jeppe and Jantine. The lovebirds immediately clicked from the start. Yes, Jantine had to get used to the rather busy Jeppe, but that was no reason to throw in the towel. In fact, they opened up to each other, good conversations were had and nothing was bottled up. During the final ceremony, the experts praised their progress during the process. Jeppe and Jantine shed tears of joy when they saw the images of their wedding. And also at the final vows love burst from the screen.

“You touched me by giving me space. You hear me, you see me and you understand me. I’m glad I had the chance to meet you. You are a beautiful person, you are sweet, attentive and caring,” Jantine opened her heart to Jeppe. And yes, of course they wanted nothing more than to stay married to each other. “I am proud to call you my wife. It is now our adventure and I hope to enjoy it. Darling, I love you,” Jeppe concluded his letter.

Two couples in this series of Married at first sight dropped out early: Malou and Sarath and Dirk and Anneke. Both couples turned out to be no match. Dirk and Anneke’s emotions initially ran so high that their honeymoon was not completed. Later it became clear that they had contact again, although Anneke stuck to her position: “As soon as it comes to the relationship, I have to drop out. And I’m really sorry for him, but we’re just not right for each other.”

Sarath and Malou tried to end the adventure gracefully, but during one of the dinners, Malou no longer wanted to sit opposite Sarath. She hopes to find someone with whom she does have that ‘za za szu’ feeling. Sarath also does not give up his search for love. “After everything I’ve been through, I still believe in it. Love is like Sinterklaas: you have to believe in it, otherwise it will never amount to anything.”
