Measures are being taken immediately after there was a second fire in a reception center for Ukrainian refugees on Wednesday. That is what the mayor of Hardenberg Maarten Offinga says. “I find it unacceptable that you endanger the neighborhood by setting fire.”

On Wednesday evening, a fire broke out for the second time in a short time in a former school building on Schuineslootweg in Schuinesloot. Seventy Ukrainian refugees will soon be housed in the old school De Wegwijzer. The police suspect arson.

‘Unacceptable’

Although the police investigation is still ongoing, Offinga does not want to wait with a response. ,,You can find everything about the reception of Ukrainian refugees in this place. But I find it unacceptable that you endanger the neighborhood by setting fire.”

“The safety of those living in the immediate vicinity is my top priority. I am taking immediate action. This means, among other things, that the access to the building blocked by demonstrators will be cleared for safety reasons.”

Let’s keep the peace together

The mayor also makes an urgent appeal to the residents of Hardenberg. “Let’s keep the peace together. Destruction or arson is never a solution. Those who have done this should realize that they mainly affect the neighbors of De Wegwijzer with these kinds of actions. We will not succumb to destruction or arson by a group of opponents.”

“We take our responsibility to offer Ukrainian refugees a good home. I hope that, despite these events, the inhabitants of Schuinesloot, like us, will offer the Ukrainian refugees a warm and safe welcome. Our advice to everyone to discuss this with each other remains standing.”

Demonstration right great good

In October, the mayor and aldermen decided to convert the former school building De Wegwijzer into a reception location for Ukrainian refugees. Last Monday there was another demonstration at the building. The mayor calls this right to demonstrate a great asset and has also offered the space for it. “But destruction and arson goes much too far.”
