The Ukrainian state security service SBU says it has stopped a Russian conspiracy to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky, among others. Two Ukrainian colonels have been arrested, the British newspaper reports The Independent.

The SBU reports this on Telegram. According to the SBU, the two colonels worked for the Russian state security service FSB. They allegedly planned to assassinate Zelensky and other senior Ukrainian officials.

The two wanted to identify individuals close to Zelensky’s security team, according to the SBU. They would be able to capture and then kill the president. Russia is said to have planned to destroy all traces of an attack. The SBU has provided no evidence of this.

According to the head of the SBU, the murder would have been a “gift” for Vladimir Putin. He was sworn in on Tuesday for his new term as president of Russia.

Zelensky is under heavy security. Since the Russian invasion, several people have been arrested for plotting to kill Zelensky. Polish and Ukrainian prosecutors said last month they had arrested a man linked to a Russian murder plot.
