The two brothers Jonathan (25) and Matthias K. (26) thought it was ‘funny’ to leave a fake bomb on a train at Central Station. The men said this today during a so-called pro forma hearing. The men left a suspicious package behind on November 12, after which a large part of the central station had to be evacuated. Jonathan K. called it “a bad joke.”

“I didn’t actually think about the consequences. It was a stupid joke and I didn’t think so much could happen. It was a very stupid action,” says Jonathan K. The two brothers K., aged 25 and 26, are suspected of having assembled an object similar to an explosive on November 12, 2023 and leaving it on a bench at Amsterdam Central Station. According to the men’s lawyers, it was clear that it was a fake bomb. The chief conductor later stated that the object looked ‘very fake’. Another witness even picked up the object and placed it on the platform so the train could continue.

Shortly after the discovery of the explosive, a 37-year-old man from Schiedam was arrested. The police announced a day later that it was an innocent person. He was released after which the police arrived at the suspects who appeared in court today during a so-called pro forma hearing.

‘A very bad joke’

After the arrest, Jonathan K. spoke to his mother and said it was a joke. “A very bad and serious joke,” his mother said in the tapped conversation. In that same conversation, Jonathan points out his brother as the main perpetrator, saying he pushed him.

The two men are released after requests from their lawyer and are allowed to await the hearing of the case in freedom.
