The Netherlands excels in beer | Is it allowed to threaten in the House just like that? | General

--

In NOW you catch up tells political reporter Edo van der Goot about the situation surrounding Thierry Baudet and Jesse Klaver. We look ahead The Passion tonight and domestic reporter Sanne Oving is at the debate about closed youth care.

You have probably read it: FVD leader Thierry Baudet who made threats towards MP Jesse Klaver (GroenLinks-PvdA). What are the risks of such actions in the House of Representatives? Is a politician inviolable? And if not, are there consequences for such actions? Political reporter Edo explains.

“As a Member of Parliament, but also as a State Secretary or Minister, you are inviolable during a debate. So you cannot simply be prosecuted,” he says. Nevertheless, the House can take measures: “The Speaker of the House can prevent a Member of Parliament from speaking. Then the microphone is turned off and your comments will not be included in the proceedings.”

“One step further is suspending an MP. The majority of the House must agree to this. In extreme cases, a Member of Parliament can be prosecuted, but this can only be done through a special route. The House itself must order an investigation and carry out that investigation itself.”

This last happened in 2016 when state secrets were leaked to the media. There was no prosecution at that time.

But do threats in Parliament influence how we interact with each other in our society? “It is certainly not going well for Jesse Klaver of GroenLinks-PvdA: his mailbox was full of threats,” says Edo.

Klaver and Baudet respond to the collision in the House of Representatives

We excel in beer. The Netherlands and Belgium are both major exporters of beer, chocolate and frozen potato products such as fries. Yet we beat our southern neighbors when it comes to the export of lager.

Belgium excels in the export of frozen potato products. This concerns an amount of 3.4 billion euros. The Netherlands is second with 1.6 billion euros.

It is an interesting day for closed youth care. Our reporter Sanne Oving, specialized in healthcare and (asylum) reception, is present at the debate today and will tell you more about it.

“Reports have been appearing about abuses in youth care for years. But now for the first time there is talk of the possible use of one of the strongest tools that the House of Representatives can use: the brief parliamentary inquiry.”

NUjij’ers wondered: how is it possible that abuses in youth care continue to come to light? “That is exactly the question that the survey must answer. Only then can we look at what needs to be done: for example, should an apology be offered?” says Sanne.

Tonight it’s that time again: The Passion. Although the Biblical Easter story remains the same every year, the cast and music move with the times.

And who do you see passing by tonight? Musical actor William Spaaij takes on the role of Jesus, actress Angela Schijf plays Mary and presenter Robbert Rodenburg plays the role of unbelieving Tomas.

Rapper Keizer chooses the side of betrayal with his role as Judas. Our entertainment editor Hasna Elbaamrani asked him all about it. Because what is it like to play a traitor?
