Under Napoleon, Limburg was one large area. On April 19, 1839 – 185 years ago – the division was signed with the Treaty of London, creating Belgian and Dutch Limburg.

On Friday April 19 – during the Limburg Day – a conference will take place in Maaseik in the Cita Humana hall at Prinsehoflaan 24.

The theme of the conference on this Limburg Day is Limburg educational area, cultural cohesion and administrative cooperationwith a report by Senator and former Governor of Dutch Limburg.

During the conference, three discussion tables will take place with policymakers and experts from the Netherlands and Belgium. The moderator is Mr. Ben Lambrechts, general director of PXL University of Applied Sciences in Hasselt.

Peter Treckpoel

Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Steven Vanderputten (UGent) will give a presentation about Peter Treckpoel. Peter Treckpoel, born in Beek (NL) and died in Bilzen (BE), wrote chronicles about social developments in both Limburgs in the last decades of the fifteenth century.

The conference will be followed by a reception, hosted by the city council of Maaseik. Harpist Hannah van den Borne provides the musical accompaniment to the reception.
