Rijkswaterstaat will start strengthening the bridge on the A7 over the Noordhollandsch Kanaal near Purmerend on Friday morning. Road users will experience significant inconvenience from the work over the next five months.

The bridge is reinforced with additional reinforcing steel. The work must be completed by September 1. Until then, road users on and around the A7 between Hoorn and Amsterdam must take into account major traffic disruptions.

From Friday morning, exits 4 and 5 towards Hoorn and Zaandam and exit 5 from Zaandam will be closed to traffic. The extra travel time can be up to an hour.

An inspection by Rijkswaterstaat in 2022 showed that the bridge no longer meets the safety requirements. The bridge’s supports can no longer handle “the large and heavy traffic of our times”.

Since then, trucks heavier than 30 tons have no longer been allowed to drive over the bridge. According to Rijkswaterstaat, they had to take a detour via regional roads that were not intended for that purpose.

During the work, traffic will be guided over one half of the bridge, while the other half will be reinforced. Vehicles may then drive a maximum of 70 kilometers per hour and not weigh more than 25 tons.
