The animals appeared to already be in a state of decomposition, writes Omroep Flevoland. So they had probably been in the water for a long time. The animals were not chipped and were about a hundred meters apart in the water.

The local resident also saw a cat last Monday. The animal was still alive and managed to get out of the water on its own. Last year a cat also emerged alive from the canal.

28th dead cat

According to local resident Henk Timmerman, there can be no doubt that an animal torturer has struck again, he tells RTL News. “This is the 28th time a dead cat has been found. In two years.” In those years before, this rarely happened.

The police say that it cannot yet be 100% established that an animal abuser is indeed active. “That question has been asked before, but we cannot say so.” The investigation that the police carried out on the dead cats showed no clear signs of violence.

Timmerman has already lost two cats himself, he previously told RTL News:

Only solution

“Everyone asks for camera surveillance,” says Timmerman. “I think that is the only solution, but the police refuse that. We have installed some wildlife cameras, but that has not yielded anything yet.” What makes it complicated is that cats are found over a length of more than a kilometer.

It is unclear how the animals end up in the water. The fact is that they can only get out again with great difficulty, says Timmerman, because the quay for the animals is very high. “That quay is dangerous at all, also for people. If a child falls into the water here, that child will immediately drown.”
