Mark van Bommel will leave Royal Antwerp FC after this season. The former midfielder of the Dutch national team, who guided his team to the national title last season, is having a difficult year this season and is on his way to the exit.
After Van Bommel (47) gave the Belgian traditional club another national title after 66 years, won the cup and qualified for the Champions League, things are going much more smoothly at the Bosuil this season. In recent weeks, the sacred fire seems to have disappeared from Antwerp and its coach. With 3 points from 6 matches, Van Bommel’s team has not achieved much in the Champions’ Play-offs this season.
Milan and Feyenoord
Van Bommel has recently been linked to clubs such as AC Milan and Feyenoord. “I read that too,” said Van Bommel. “What should you think of that as a trainer? And what is true about that? Maybe there are other clubs that have asked.”
After a season in which financial concerns were discussed more often than sporting ones, and football affairs director Marc Overmars was suspended, the focus is now only on the cup final next week, that much is clear.
The ex-player of PSV, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan, among others, has been working at the Bosuil since 2022, where he succeeded Brian Priske.
