Cardiff City is demanding €120 million from Nantes in compensation for its relegation from the Premier League in 2019, reports say L’Équipe. According to a study by a data agency, this was partly due to the plane crash in which striker Emiliano Sala was killed. The Argentinian striker died in an accident while on his way to Wales to complete his transfer from Nantes to Cardiff.

Data agency Analytics FC has calculated that the goals Sala was expected to have scored for the club would have increased Cardiff City’s chance of survival to 54.2 percent. The financial loss of the relegation and the ‘reputational damage’ incurred is estimated at around 120 million euros, according to financial expert Maurice Nussenbaum.

According to the French newspaper L’Équipe Nantes has now also filed a claim. This is based on ‘moral damages’ and they want Cardiff City to be fined for their claim.

The mud fight between the two clubs continues five years after the accident. After the accident, Cardiff City wanted to get out of the transfer fee of 17 million euros, because according to them he was still formally owned by Nantes when he crashed. However, the Welsh club was not vindicated.
