Kees Jansma has no idea who should become Feyenoord’s new head coach. The Rotterdam team will most likely say goodbye to Arne Slot after this season and will therefore have to look for a successor. According to Jansma, Joseph Oosting would have been a good candidate, but he re-signed for FC Twente. In any case, the former press secretary of the Dutch national team is of the opinion that Slot’s successor does not necessarily have to be a ‘big’ name.

“The person I see sitting there has signed: Oosting,” Jansma responds in an interview FCUpdate.nl when asked who should succeed Slot at Feyenoord. “I have experienced Oosting and found it very good, very pleasant.” The current head coach of FC Twente was briefly linked to a move to Rotterdam-Zuid, but in the same week he announced that he would sign in Enschede. According to Jansma, the difficulty at Feyenoord mainly lies in the high expectations of the supporters. “People always say it has to be a big name. Yes why? You will be a big name one day.”

Slot was also not a ‘big’ name when he was presented as head coach by Feyenoord. “Slot certainly did well at AZ, but in the end he is a simple footballer from PEC Zwolle,” says Jansma, who wonders why Feyenoord would not try with a head coach from the middle bracket of the Eredivisie. “Why wouldn’t you dare to put an Alex Pastoor there? Why not?” Pastoor is impressing this season with Almere City, which is experiencing its first season at the highest level. The experienced coach has already announced his departure from the club from Flevoland. His future is still uncertain, but Jansma would dare to take the ‘gamble’.

“What you see at Oosting, and I also see that at Pastoor, is that they are very busy with their profession. They are really obsessed, they think about it,” says the former sports presenter. “Slot does that too and you need that, someone who is able to make players better.” Feyenoord does not have to knock on the door of one trainer anyway. “Ron Jans is not possible. He is stuck at FC Utrecht, so that won’t work,” says Jansma, a supporter of FC Utrecht.

In the interview, Jansma also discusses Slot’s upcoming departure to Liverpool, the coaching career of Robin van Persie and his bond with Wesley Sneijder.
