The RTV Drenthe reporters Marjorie Noë and Lidian Boelens missed the NoorderpersJournalism Prize last night in Forum Groningen. This went to the duo Thereza Langeler/Hilbrand Polman of Dagblad van het Noorden for their series of stories about the Fochteloërveen.

By awarding the Noorderpers Prize for Journalism, Noorderpers, a platform of journalists and communications experts in Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen, wants to put northern journalism in the spotlight. A jury assesses entries on, among other things, regional social significance, originality, topicality, impact, care and accuracy.

An RTV Drenthe production by Marjorie Noë in collaboration with Liam Heeremans and Nicole Aldershof was one of the contenders for the prize. They made a double report about young people in Drenthe, who generally have great difficulty finding a home in our province. As a result, they leave Drenthe and then never return. Yet there are also young people who do their best to stay in Drenthe, such as in Sleen and Vledder, the report showed.

“A very complete dossier, in which the editors have fortunately made the choice to focus on the young people of Drenthe themselves. The problem is already known, but an extra step has been taken, which makes this a hopeful dossier, because specific attention has been paid to solutions. It is an inspiring form of solutionsjournalism on our own soil in Drenthe,” according to the jury report.

Lidian Boelens also works as a freelance journalist at RTV Drenthe, but was nominated with a report that she published on behalf of Sikkom last year in collaboration with Alessandro Tessari (UKrant). This report was about the exploitation of international students in the Groningen catering industry.

“They succeed in giving the reader a knot in the stomach about the exploitation of international students through the enormous amount of anecdotal material. All the experiences of the respondents are not only collected online, but also door to door. Hard-working journalistic work “well written,” said the jury.

But the Noorderpers Prize for Journalism went to Langeler and Polman. “They have turned over every lump of peat in this beautiful summer series in Dagblad van het Noorden and Leeuwarder Courant. They provide a complete package of well-researched facts, with the immediate reason for the urgent discussion about the nitrogen targets. They chose the original approach by see how measures for agriculture, traffic and tourism work out in this centrally located and unique nature reserve,” said jury chairman Anne Peetoom.

Jaap Velema, mayor of Westerwolde. received the Reuring Prize. “We got to know him in recent years as a tireless fighter. Against the problems surrounding the registration center for asylum seekers in Ter Apel. And against The Hague, which hardly pays attention to the problems in our region,” the jury describes. Due to illness, Velema was unable to did not receive the certificate, but in a written response he stated that he considered the award ‘honorable’.
