At a time when the pressure on young people is increasing, it is crucial to invest in their mental well-being. At the forefront of this mission is the Alfa college in Hardenberg, which proudly uses a series of lessons to strengthen the mental strength of young students.

The recently launched ‘Get a grip’ lesson series, developed by interpersonal skills teacher, coach and former soldier Jerom Sluijs, is aimed at actively involving students between 15 and 19 years old in exploring and strengthening their mental resilience. Instead of traditional instructional methods, this series offers several dynamic sessions where students participate in engaging activities that help them become aware of their own expectations, motivations and achievements.

One of the most powerful aspects of this lesson series is its focus on cultivating a growth mindset – the belief that intelligence and skills can be developed through dedication and effort. Through interactive exercises, students learn how to set goals and take steps to achieve those goals, equipping them with the essential skills to face challenges with confidence.

With this initiative, the Alfa college, together with the Get a grip program, confirms its commitment to the well-being of its students in education. By not only teaching, but also supporting students in developing the essential skills needed for success in life, the Alfa college in Hardenberg is leading the way to a future in which mental strength and resilience are central.
