Discover the world of plastic soup

Discover the global problem surrounding the ‘plastic soup’ within the oceans on an interactive afternoon at the Miramar Sea Museum. By participating in a challenging quiz you will gain more insight into this serious environmental issue. Tanja Velthove, representative of Seacleaners-int, will talk about alternative solutions without plastic.

Children in the age group of 4 to 12 years make their own fantasy fish from plastic waste during this activity. The Plastic Soup afternoon has three entry times, namely at 1:30 PM, 2:30 PM or 3:30 PM. You can register via the museum’s website, miramar-zeemuseum.nl.

Voices of those who are not heard

In the musical program Forbidden Votes Let the May 4 Project hear the voices of those who cannot always make themselves heard. For example, the choir wants to pass on music that was or is forbidden, to make voices heard that are obliged to remain silent and to amplify languages ​​that should not be heard. The program includes songs by Sami, Roma, Navaho and by Syrians, Uighurs and Iranian women.

The songs are performed by two choirs, who sing alternately and together. The choir sings, among other things Beautiful Rain , a song by American composer David Asher Brown. The words in that song are words of refugees from Darfur; cries for help that are rarely heard.

The triumphs of icon Maria Callas

Maria Callas is one of the greatest icons in opera history. Pia Douwes takes on the role of this singer in Master class . In this performance by American author Terrence McNally, the legendary opera singer, in the autumn of her career, gives master classes to young opera talents. The interest in the greatest opera singer of this century is still unprecedented. Callas is troubled by the lack of talent among her students and battles with demons from her past.

She remembers the days when she celebrated triumphs as the world’s greatest opera singer, the time of cutthroat competition and her tempestuous relationship with Aristotle Onassis. Douwes plays music by Verdi, Puccini and Bellini in the piece. The performance can also be seen on Sunday in Assen at Theater DNK.

Music from the Scottish Highlands

Breabach is an inventive contemporary folk band from Scotland and brings an authentic Scottish sound to the Kleine Zaal of the Oosterpoort. The basis of their music lies in the tradition of the Highlands and the Scottish islands. The folk band was founded in 2005 and has had many adventures in the meantime. The quintet presented their music widely in the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe and performed at festivals such as the Isle of Skye Music Festival, Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, Festival Interceltique de Lorient and WOMAD.

After the successful single Eadar an Dà Bhràigh Breabach released the album in 2022 Fas out. For this album, the band was strongly inspired by the natural environment of Scotland. The protection, conservation and regeneration of the natural world influenced every part of the album-making process. In the songs the band shows progressive and traditional elements in their music. The same year Breabach was named Folk Band of the Year and in 2023 they were a finalist in Album of the Year at the BBC ALBA Scots Trads Music Awards.

Thirty professional artists show up at fifteen locations in Peize, Roden and Norg see their skills during Verkuno’s Open Atelier Route Noordenveld. On Saturday, May 11, art expert Dick Schuur will open the route at 11 a.m. in the Paardestal, Hooghaar 1, in Peize. Here you can also see a retrospective exhibition with works by most of the artists. Participating artists in Peize are Ruth Assink, Bernadette Bijl, Angelien Coco Martin, Anita Hoekstra, Rianne Kooijman, Jolande van Luijk, Olesia Liashova, Alfred Oosterman, Annet Raben and Wilhelmina Zoutewelle.

In Roden these are Rachel Climo, Jolanda Dieuwke Lichthart, Hans van der Mark, Grietje Nieuwhof, Derek Scholte and all Verkuno members at the K38 group location. In Norg you can admire the arts of Linda van Huffelen and Ilona Molenaar with their studio mates and the arts of the sculpture collective Het Paradijs.

From Ascension to Pentecost, 22 professional artists exhibit in 20 churches. The artists created new work based on the theme of ‘comfort’, which led to countless paintings, sculptures, ceramic objects, monumental art, textile works, photographs, drawings and more. Paintings by Edwin Grissen can be admired in De Wijngaard in Uithuizermeeden, a film by Evelyne van Duyl can be seen in the Hyppolytus Church in Middelstum, in the historic church of Appingedam Joke Schepers is creating a place of comfort and Collective Cammenga/Kindt/Bos is building an installation in the Boniface Church in Vries.
