On Thursday, May 4, it is Remembrance Day and throughout the Netherlands we commemorate all Dutch war victims who have died anywhere in the world since the Second World War. Below we have listed the Remembrance Day programs of Groningen, Ten Boer and Haren for you.

The theme for May 4 and 5, 2024 is ‘Freedom tells: prelude to 80 years of freedom’. With this theme, the National Committee draws attention to the scars left behind by the Second World War that are still visible. This is also the year that the lustrum celebration of 80 years of freedom starts in September.

The National Commemoration will take place from 6 p.m.

6:25 p.m Arrangement of the participants in the Silent Tour at the Van Mesdag Clinic on the Hereweg
6:35 p.m Welcome and introductory words. Followed by the laying of wreaths at the Jewish Monument by the Groningen municipal council and the Groningen 4 May Commemoration Foundation.
This will be followed by a Silent Tour from the Hereweg. The Silent Tour is preceded by Gruno’s Postharmonie Groningen. Route: Hereweg, Gedempte Zuiderdiep, Oosterstraat, Grote Markt, Kreupelstraat, Martinikerkhof.

war memorial Saint George and the dragon. Possibility to lay flower(s), flower arrangements,
wreaths. The Chr. Harmony company Patrimonium and Gruno’s Postharmonie play choral music.

After the Commemoration, everyone is welcome in the Martini Church for hot coffee or tea. An ironing
quartet consisting of students from the Prince Claus Conservatory will provide musical accompaniment to this informal meeting in the background.

21.00 o’clock Theater Na de Dam plays the show HOOP in the Martini Church. There are no costs attached to this.

Program Ten Boer

Silent Procession on Saturday, May 4, 2024

The Silent Tour departs from the Hendrik Westerplein, led by the Volharding music association. The route runs via Wigboldstraat and Stadsweg to the old cemetery. Flowers are laid on the war graves and Perseverance plays. The Silent Tour continues via Gaykingastraat and Lindenstraat – here there is a short stop at the Stolpersteine ​​- and finally ends at the war memorial on the Vijverweide.
