If we watch the video clip of Europapa may be believed, Joost Klein will be on stage in Malmö in April in a striking blue suit with shoulder pads. His outfit is very familiar in Zeeland. “There were several people who said: hey, Joost’s clothing has associations with the Axel regional costume.”

This is what director of Museum Het Warenhuis in Axel Piet de Blaeij said to Omroep Zeeland. In his museum in the Zeeland town there are dolls dressed in local costumes. And indeed: the shoulders show striking similarities with Klein’s outfit for the Eurovision Song Contest.

“I know that more people are inspired by the regional costume. Photographers, artists, painters, sculptors, everything,” says De Blaeij, who therefore does not rule out that Klein was also inspired.

‘Like a peacock in the middle of summer’

The shoulders in women’s costumes in Axel, the so-called wings, grew upward around 1900, writes Omroep Zeeland. “The women compared the points on their shoulders and concluded: Damn, yours is bigger than mine. And then things went a step further,” says the museum director. “You can decorate it nicely with a beautiful beaded beech. In short, you stand out like a peacock in the middle of summer.”

Klein designed his blue suit himself. De Blaeij is curious whether he found his inspiration in Zeeland. If that’s the case, he hopes Klein will send the museum a message.

Stage act

In the meantime, more and more is becoming clear about Klein’s stage act at the Eurovision Song Contest. Artist Gover Meit, better known as Stefano Keizers, is the creative brain behind the act and gave a glimpse of the veil this week in Sophie & Jeroen. He said it will be a combination of the acts from Käärijä, last year’s Finnish entry with the song Cha Cha Chaand Salvador Sobral, the Portuguese who released the song in 2017 Amar Pelos Dois the song festival won.

It was also announced that Klein’s two best friends, influencers Appi Mussa and Martijn van Eijzeren, better known as Stuntkabouter, will be on stage with him.

Semi finals

Klein’s semi-final in Malmö is on Thursday evening, May 9. If he makes it to the final, he will be back on stage on Saturday evening, May 11. He is now in third place among bookmakers. Europapa has been high in the charts in the Netherlands for weeks.
