Emmen will lay out the red carpet for the royal couple and their family tomorrow. Because of King’s Day, a lot of national attention is paid to the company. But Willem-Alexander and Máxima visit Drenthe more often.

Sometimes they come together, sometimes apart. The latter was the case in September 2018. King Willem-Alexander was allowed to open the new sheepfold in Bargerveen. For that he had to flex his muscles; Instead of the usual ‘ribbon cutting’, he opened the stable doors in one go. Something different again.

A year later, Willem-Alexander had his wife Máxima in tow. The royal couple visited the municipalities of Hoogeveen, De Wolden, Westerveld and Meppel.

They consulted Fokker, one of the larger employers in Drenthe. They then became acquainted with Drenthe’s nature on the Dwingelderveld and studied at Astron to take a look into the universe. The one-day tour through Drenthe ended in Meppel after a view of the renovated Haveltermade district and a visit to the Grote Kerk.

Perhaps Willem-Alexander’s most captivating moment in Drenthe is the confrontation between his security guards and window cleaner Herman Dinius. In Borger, Dinius cycled home, ladder in hand. When he cycled towards the king with his bodyguards, he was in danger of being pulled off his bicycle by a security guard.
