Dutch municipalities, provinces and the government have invested heavily in making mobility data available in recent years. Consider, for example, information about where schools are located, where environmental zones start and what the speed limits are for various roads.

Because the Netherlands has this data in such good order, Kia and Hyundai will be launching new functions in our country. The car manufacturers will develop these functions, but the Netherlands can contribute ideas about what is desirable to make cars safer and more sustainable. A few examples:

  • Kia and Hyundai will use the data from the matrix signs above highways to inform road users about the current speed limits and the closure or opening of lanes.
  • The manufacturers will also use the data available in the Netherlands to have the cars provide warnings for approaching ambulances and when approaching school zones.
  • Furthermore, it is being investigated whether the battery of an electric car can be used as a temporary storage location to supply power to homes.
  • In addition, it is being examined whether and how a system can be built into cars that allows them to register themselves to gain access to a restricted area. So that, for example, a pole automatically lowers when emergency or emergency traffic has to pass through

Minister Mark Harbers (Infrastructure and Water Management): “A car that beeps when you reverse and get too close to a tree. A car that sounds the alarm if you are not wearing your seat belt. Our cars increasingly ensure that we get from A to B safely. The Netherlands has very good information about our roads, and manufacturers can use that data to make cars even safer and more sustainable. It’s great to see that Kia and Hyundai are happy to take up that challenge, I am very curious to see how cars will be improved as a result in the coming years.”

Collaborate with navigation and car manufacturers

The Netherlands has signed a declaration of intent in South Korea. The data that Kia and Hyundai will use is available to all navigation and car manufacturers. The collaboration is therefore not exclusive, other manufacturers can also participate. There is also no financial compensation.

The agreement is a follow-up to the previous project Safety Priority Serviceswhere various navigation and car manufacturers have ensured that their users receive a signal when they approach a potentially dangerous situation, for example if they are quickly approaching a traffic jam or if an ambulance with flashing lights is in their vicinity.
