Renewed N270 between Deurne and the border with Limburg will receive recycled asphalt

--

During the reconstruction of the N270 between Deurne and the border with Limburg, the province was forced to opt for alternative methods due to the nitrogen regulations, so that the project does not cause nitrogen deposition on the nearby Natura 2000 areas and no Wnb permit is required. This has led to contractor Strukton using electric construction machines, among other things, but also using a sustainable solution for asphalt paving.

“All the asphalt that we use in the redesign of the N270 consists of recycled material. Not only in the lower layers, but also in the asphalt surface layer, the visible top layer of the road surface that we drive over. No less than 65 to 70 percent of old material is recycled instead of new raw materials being extracted,” according to the province and Strukton.

Foundation
The executor had to come up with various smart solutions to limit nitrogen emissions from the entire project as much as possible. “For the road section within the Deurne municipal boundary, the entire existing foundation of the road was also reused after it had been dug through. This meant we did not have to supply new materials,” Strukton reports.

Lighting poles
In consultation with the municipality of Deurne, the contractor has also reused some of the lighting poles: “We aim for the highest possible rung on the ‘r-ladder’. This indicates the degree of circularity, or reuse. The terms ‘reduce’, ‘repair’, ‘reuse’ and ‘recycle’ probably mean something. With the smart reuse of materials on and near the N270, we strive for the most sustainable way of working in Deurne.”

In recent weeks, the N270 between Deurne and the roundabout at Ysselsteyn was closed for a number of weekends to allow work mainly on the main carriageway. “The work on the N270 is progressing steadily. The smart traffic lights are now also working. Road inspectors from the province of North Brabant monitor the operation and adjustment and, where necessary, adjust these adjustments,” says Strukton.

Road closures
The road will also be closed twice for a weekend in the coming period due to the work. The road will be closed on Friday, May 31 from 7:00 PM until Monday, June 3 at 6:00 AM. The road will also be closed from Friday June 14 at 7pm until Monday June 17 at 6am.

Implementer Strukton made a video of the work that has taken place in recent weeks, explaining what has happened so far. You can view these below.
