Vitesse is relegated from the Eredivisie this season after 35 years. But even worse is that the club has to fear for a professional license. Vitesse has a debt of 18.9 million euros and must submit a budget before June 15 that the KNVB licensing committee can live with. More than a week ago, Vitesse lost the last bit of hope of maintaining in the Eredivisie when it was deducted 18 points because the requirements of the licensing committee have still not been met.

Van Ginkel played for ten years in the youth team of Vitesse and made his breakthrough as a professional at the club from Arnhem. “Then you love that club,” says the midfielder who later played for Chelsea, AC Milan and PSV. After two serious knee injuries, the midfielder is playing at a lower level at Vitesse. “But I still expected more from a sporting point of view,” he said.

Van Ginkel came on as a substitute against Fortuna Sittard and equalized (2-2). “I think I am now our top scorer with six goals,” he laughed. “My contract is expiring and I haven’t heard anything from the club yet. The chance that I will stay here is small. Playing football in the first division is actually not an option for me, because so many clubs play on artificial grass there. I can’t manage that more.”

Vitesse also has to save millions of euros if it receives a professional license for the next season. “I still feel fit,” said Van Ginkel. “I could have started against Fortuna, but the trainer decided differently. Of course, I didn’t completely agree with that. But I think it’s great that the crowd has continued to support us. The fans have been quite positive all season. That’s “I’m not leaving Vitesse because I want to let them down. That is certainly not the case.”
