The construction of 262 affordable rental apartments on Berlinplein in Leidsche Rijn has started. The project, BLOEI030, is part of the 19.2 million euros subsidy that Utrecht received to accelerate the construction of eight new construction projects in Utrecht.

The new building will contain 156 social housing units and 108 mid-range rental units. There will also be 1,500 m² of social business spaces and workplaces. In addition, forty homes are intended for ‘sheltered homes’, a collaboration with the Salvation Army where people can live independently under supervision.

The BLOEI030 complex will have six floors. The residential blocks consist of composite buildings, which form sheltered squares, streets and courtyards inside. These squares should encourage people to come together.

Subsidy

The initiators received a start-up construction incentive for this project, a subsidy from the government for projects that are sufficiently advanced in terms of planning to start construction, but are delayed due to, among other things, changed economic circumstances.

In total, Utrecht received more than 19.2 million euros to start eight new construction projects. The rental apartments on Berlinplein are one of them. Construction will take approximately two and a half years.

Councilor Eelco Eerenberg was present at the start of construction. “There is a great need in the city for social housing and mid-range rental housing. I am therefore very happy that we can celebrate the start of construction together. This project was partly realized through the government’s start-up construction incentive and is part of the Utrecht approach. With this approach, we have been taking measures in Utrecht for some time to maintain the level of new home construction. So that we can also continue to build suitable housing for all Utrecht residents in Utrecht,” says Eerenberg.
