Flash delivery company Getir has announced that it is leaving the Netherlands. The United Kingdom, Germany and the United States are also being left, the company has announced. With Getir’s departure, its Gorillas brand will also disappear from Europe.

During the corona pandemic, flash grocery delivery companies continued to grow strongly. But that market has now cooled down sharply due to the uncertain economy and inflation, which means that consumers are less likely to spend money. There is also fierce competition in the grocery delivery market.

In August last year, Getir announced it would cut 2,500 jobs, which amounted to approximately 10 percent of its total workforce. Getir also said at the time that the company was leaving several Dutch cities because the number of orders was very limited. The flash delivery company was still active in Amsterdam, Amstelveen, The Hague, Haarlem, Rotterdam and Utrecht.

Getir sets its sights on Turkey

Getir states in a press release that it wants to expand its presence in the Turkish home market, where it is “best positioned to further grow its delivery service”. The flash delivery company also reports that it has raised new financing, intended to speed up the Turkish plans.

The flash delivery person does not communicate the amount Getir collects. The money comes from the Arab investment house Mubadala and the Swiss G Squared.

The markets from which Getir operates are responsible for 7 percent of global turnover. The American online supermarket FreshDirect, a subsidiary of the company founded in 2015, will remain active in the US.

Getir left Southern European countries before

Last year Getir already said goodbye to Italy, Spain and Portugal. At that time there were also reports in business media that the company was considering leaving the Netherlands. The British news channel Sky News recently reported, based on sources, that a departure from the Netherlands was imminent. The company itself did not want to respond to those market rumors at the time.

Getir says that employees will be informed about the departure on Monday. “Getir would like to thank all its employees for their efforts and contribution to the growth of the company,” the company said in a statement.
