The worst King’s Day hangovers have probably gone away and most streets have been swept clean again. Residents in the Jordaan received many festive visitors again this year, and this traditionally includes nuisance from waste and urine. Some local residents turned a blind eye, others were less happy: “Incomprehensible, people just pee in porches and mailboxes.”

Philomeen lives on the Egelantiersgracht and is still busy with her broom and garbage bags two days after King’s Day. “Oh, I don’t mind it that much,” she says. “It makes me laugh too. While fifteen of us were eating, girls just walked by with their butts naked. After a few drinks, they no longer have any shame at all,” she laughs.

What she does find annoying is that her plants have been destroyed. “People pee in the containers, stand in them and someone even fell off them into the water,” she says. That’s why her neighbor also fled the city. “I find it sad when I come home and the plants are wilting because they got too much piss. They don’t do well on that.”

Another neighbor says she understands. “There are far too few public toilets in the city and it is just way too busy. I can’t blame the youth,” she says.
