A new study by AgeCalculator.com shows that the Netherlands had the ninth highest increase in the retirement age worldwide between 2000 and 2020. Bulgaria takes the cake with a whopping 13.26 percent increase. Estonia and Latvia follow with an increase of 11.93 percent and 10.57 percent respectively. New Zealand, the only non-European country in the top 10, is in fourth place with an increase of 9.84 percent. The Netherlands is in ninth place with an increase of 7.65 percent.

The study analyzed OECD data on retirement age in all countries available from 2000 to 2020 to discover which citizens have experienced the largest increases in retirement age. The Paris-based Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is a forum for government officials that discusses and analyzes the impact and development of policies aimed at improving the socio-economic well-being of citizens around the world.

Bulgaria takes first place because the average retirement age of men and women in 2000 was still 56 years, while in 2020 it had risen to 63. The numbers two and three on the list, Estonia and Latvia, increased the retirement age of respectively 58 and 59 years in 2000 to 65 years in 2020. Number 4, New Zealand, increased from 61 years in 2000 to 67 years in 2020. The other countries in the top 10 are Hungary (5), Romania (6 ), Slovenia (7), Portugal (8) and Lithuania (10).

A spokesperson for AgeCalculator.com commented on the findings: “The trend towards rising retirement ages in many countries reflects a complex interplay of several factors. Some of these include the extension of people’s life expectancy, which has increased due to medical advances. Another is economic pressure that translates into people not being able to retire comfortably due to the rising cost of living. Finally, shifting demographics play a role, such as declining birth rates and an aging population.”
