New exhibition in Centraal Museum shows fashion from Utrecht’s private collections

--

A new exhibition can be seen in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht from May 9. The exhibition, FASHION * CHAPEAU: Two special private collections unveiledshows a number of iconic fashion items from two Utrecht private collections.

The exhibition includes designs by Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, Maria Monaci Gallenga, Christian Dior and Paul Poiret. It is the first time that these designs can be seen together in an exhibition.

The pieces come from the private collections of Hans van Emmerik and the late Tiny Meihuizen-Wijker, both Utrecht collectors with an impressive collection of couture, hats and accessories. Van Emmerik owns more than 300 garments and specializes in couture from the period 1900 – 1950, of which he has the largest private collection in the Netherlands.

The exhibition features more than fifty hats from Meihuizen-Wijker’s collection. Special are the hats with flowers and bird feathers, which were very popular at the beginning of the twentieth century.

‘Art in itself’

Ninke Bloemberg is fashion curator at the Centraal Museum. She calls fashion collecting an art in itself. “Putting together a collection takes time, knowledge, passion, a good eye and a bit of luck. In FASHION * CHAPEAU highlights from two top-quality private collections will come together for the first time, supplemented with special objects from our own collection and a digital fitting experience.” The digital try-on experience means that visitors can try on 3D scanned hats from different time periods.

MODE * CHAPEAU can be seen from May 9 to September 29 at De Verdieping in the Centraal Museum.
