The province of Gelderland is going to shoot a wolf that doesn’t seem afraid of people with a paintball gun. The wolf has been seen in Ermelo and the surrounding area for several weeks and appears to be begging for food.

Images on social media show the wolf surrounding cars. The predator does not leave and according to wolf expert Glenn Lelieveld it is clear that the wolf is begging for food.

According to Lelieveld, the wolf can only exhibit this behavior because the animal has been fed. “I am furious. It is the third time this has happened and this really has to stop,” said wolf expert last week.

Lelieveld is referring to a wolf in Oude Willem, on the border of Drenthe and Friesland, that was lured by photographers with bowls of food. Eighteen months ago, a wolf also walked on De Hoge Veluwe and came close to people.

That wolf had to be scared by shooting paintball bullets. But due to a long legal process, no shot was fired in the end. On Friday, the province announced that it would grant a permit for the use of a paintball gun against the wolf. The aim is to teach the wolf not to approach people, according to the province’s explanation.
