Major fire in Oss

NOS Newstoday, 12:11

The fire at the distribution center in Oss was brought under control after more than 28 hours. The fire is not yet completely out, but the fire brigade is allowing the building to burn out in a controlled manner without extinguishing it, reports the Brabant-Noord Safety Region. The adjacent buildings have been spared.

The fire broke out around 4:30 am on Friday morning in the 300 by 150 meter distribution center and has only gotten bigger since then. Last night around 11 p.m., about 250 firefighters from all over the region came to help put out the fire.

That was not easy, because the source of the fire was in the cold room. As a result, fire extinguishing water could freeze and it was more difficult for the emergency services to do the work, also because it was slippery. “It was -20 in some places because of the cold room. As a result, the water turned into a large ice rink,” says a spokesperson for the Safety Region. NOS Radio 1 News.

The flames came out of the roof of the warehouse:

According to Omroep Brabant, which spoke to the municipality, there is still some smoke nuisance in the area, especially in a number of streets around the warehouse. The municipality still advises to stay away from that area, although the smoke is expected to clear quickly now that fire extinguishing is no longer being done.

Five people who live around the warehouse had to spend last night elsewhere. They were housed with relatives or hotels. Because the direction of smoke can still change due to the wind, they are not allowed to go home yet.

No hazardous substances were released during the fire, the Safety Region reports. However, particles of solar panels, including pieces of glass, can be found nearby. The particles have drifted with the smoke over the neighborhood and fall back down as soot particles, possibly in gardens and on football fields.

“They are not dangerous, but it is good to put on gloves before picking them up,” said the spokesperson for the Safety Region. Larger parts must be reported to the municipality so that they can be collected, according to the regional broadcaster.
