PSV became champions on Sunday afternoon, for the first time since 2018 and for the 25th time in club history. Things did not go as smoothly against Sparta Rotterdam as has been the norm this season, but in the end Peter Bosz’s team won and will be able to pull out on Monday. The national title is the culmination of an extremely impressive season in terms of numbers and playing technique.

Sparta proudly tweeted around 12.15 that captain Bart Vriends had at least won the toss, fully in line with the expectation that the Kasteellords would only feature on this long Brabant day and undoubtedly even longer Brabant night. Things turned out a bit differently: the Spartans started the match very strongly. It soon became 0-1. Saïd Bakari’s preliminary work was excellent, the same applied to Metinho’s completion.

For a moment it looked like Sparta was really going to play spoilsport. Jeroen Rijsdijk’s team performed excellently and could have hurt a nervous PSV more in the first fifteen minutes, after which two quick goals pushed the match in the expected direction. After a corner kick, Bakari gave the final push for the 1-1 in his own goal, and Johan Bakayoko scored the second shortly after a pass from Luuk de Jong.

But Sparta was serious – they came alongside within half an hour. Koki Saito steamed up on the left, the Japanese shot was deflected by Olivier Boscagli and fell straight into the goal. PSV dealt with this setback better. The Eindhoven team increased the pressure and had the best chance to regain the lead before half time through Joey Veerman. The Volendammer shot just over, so the players went to tea with a 2-2 score.

Sparta also deserved plenty of compliments for its battle plan in the second half. Almost all Eredivisie teams were PSV’s playthings this season, but Rijsdijk’s team also regularly found space to play football after the break. Halfway through the second half, Sparta was only asleep for a while after a free kick from Veerman. Boscagli, so unfortunate at the equalizer, was inexplicably free and punished it with a stylish volley: 3-2.

You couldn’t call PSV’s game grand, with or without a soft ‘g’, but after the Frenchman’s goal the celebration in the Philips Stadium could no longer be held. Just fifteen minutes before the end, even the biggest pessimist in and around Eindhoven dared to cheer. Malik Tillman sent Jordan Teze free to Nick Olij. The defender kept the peace and pushed the fourth PSV goalkeeper in. Hans van Breukelen knew enough: the PSV icon could prepare to present the bowl.

The final phase was played on a grass stage. Bosz took the opportunity to put a few more substitutes in the spotlight, while 35,000 pairs of eyes mainly watched the clock. Referee Dennis Higler tested patience a little longer, but after two additional minutes his whistle confirmed what was already clear in the autumn. PSV is by far the best team in the Eredivisie this season and can now officially call themselves champions of the Netherlands. It’s going to be a long night in the City of Light.
