1/3 Flemming sings on Liberation Day: ‘Freedom cannot be taken for granted’

This Liberation Day is a dream come true for singer Flemming. Not only can he sit in a helicopter, he will also perform in his ‘own’ city. “Den Bosch is an eight-minute flight away, I heard.” Together with three other ambassadors of freedom, Claude, Wend and Son Mieux, the 14 liberation festivals in the Netherlands are visited.

After the artists gave each other a big hug, they made their way to their helicopter. Flemming felt excited but also responsible for conveying a message. “It’s great that I can kick off Liberation Day with a helicopter in the city where I was born and raised.”

“Freedom cannot be taken for granted, we can hold our hands here.”

Then Flemming turns his gaze away from the military helicopter and his expression becomes serious. “I think Liberation Day is an important holiday. Especially in these times with the war in Ukraine and Gaza, you become aware that freedom cannot be taken for granted. Then you realize that we can take our hands in how we live here, but you also realize that this could easily turn around.”

Then the helicopter’s engines start making noise, signaling Flemming to get in. In total he will perform on five different stages in the Netherlands. He ends the day in Amsterdam during the concert on the Amstel. Traditionally, the royal family is also present.

“As far as I’m concerned, May 4 and 5 are the most important holidays in the Netherlands.”

Another Brabander present at the air base is Breda State Secretary for Defense Christophe van der Maat. He is pleased that with these flights the Defense Department can contribute to awareness that freedom is something to fight for. “My personal opinion is therefore that May 4 and 5 are the most important holidays for the Netherlands. It connects everyone regardless of your political preference or religious background.”

Flemming did not have to think long about becoming an ambassador of freedom.
