Commemorations

WOODEN What an atmosphere and conviviality during the Freedom Lunch at the fountain next to the town hall. Ludy Groos and her fantastic team of volunteers, including students from College de Heemlanden, allowed two hundred people to enjoy a well-organized lunch on Liberation Day. The Freedom Lunch took place for the second time in Houten under a radiant sun.

“By being together and eating together, connections are created and new contacts are made. In this way we share freedom,” Groos said in her welcome speech. She thanked all the sponsors who made the lunch possible. Words that Mayor Gilbert Isabella could fully agree with. “It is important to keep talking to each other, that is how we do it here in Houten.”

Before lunch, the mayor lit the Liberation Fire in front of the town hall. Members of Scouting Schonauwen had collected the Liberation Fire from Wageningen on the night of May 4 to 5. The members of the scouts arrived amid great public interest and preceded by a Piper Band, after which they handed the fire to the mayor.

Isabella then unveiled a new ‘Veterans Anjerperk’ opposite the town hall, together with veteran Marcel Dagniaux. The white carnation was introduced in the Netherlands in 2005 as an expression of appreciation for Dutch veterans.
