PVV leader Geert Wilders is still optimistic about the outcome of the negotiations. “I think it’s possible. It just takes a while,” he said tonight. According to Van der Plas, the negotiators ‘just need a little more time to explain some things’. She did not want to say anything about the content of the conversations.

According to Wilders, negotiations will also continue in the coming weekend. “That means we’ll go to any lengths to try to get out,” he said. “We can’t say yet how that will turn out.”

Appears less optimistic

NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt sounded a little less optimistic after today’s discussions. According to him, there are still ‘significant differences of opinion’ on ‘several themes’ between the parties. He did not want to say tonight what those themes are.

“For a while there was still hope that it would be completed before Ascension Day,” says political reporter Irene de Kruif. “But the differences are still too big. You saw that happen in front of the camera. Geert Wilders and Caroline van der Plas came out cheerful and laughing. Pieter Omtzigt looked less in good spirits and said that there are still major differences of opinion.”

Informants Elbert Dijkgraaf and Richard van Zwol still have a week to reach a coalition agreement with the parties. “The informants joked that they think the chance of success is more than 87 percent,” says De Kruif. “It is not without reason that the parties have been negotiating for weeks, according to the informants.”

On May 15, Dijkgraaf and Van Zwol will send their final report to the House of Representatives. The question remains whether the trust between the four parties is high enough.
