The CPNB announced today that Joe Speedboat the central book will be during the Netherlands Reads campaign in 2024.
The book will be distributed for free throughout the month of November so that as many people as possible can read it at the same time. Wieringa’s classic will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year and will be released in a free edition by the CPNB especially for Heel Nederland Leest.
CPNB boss Eveline Aendekerk is already delighted:
In November, the whole of the Netherlands will read the same book. This brings people together and increases social cohesion. This 19th edition of the campaign is perhaps more needed now than ever before. That’s why I’m extra happy that we’re going to read a hell of a novel with Tommy Wieringa’s Joe Speedboot. A book that you simply must have read and that you can re-read endlessly. The story about Fransje Hermans is a classic, for young and old, about a very special friendship. I’m sure that with Tommy Wieringa as ambassador, the whole of the Netherlands will come in November Joe Speedboat going to read!

Since Joe Speedboat appeared, I had devilish pleasure because of its wonderful course. When I wrote it, I had no idea who would ever want to read this strange story. To my surprise, it was liked by many. What I enjoyed most, however, was its popularity in schools; Dutch teachers often talked about how they got even the most stubborn book haters to read with it. With this Heel Nederland Leest edition, a new chapter is added to the cheerful history of Joe Speedboot. Let’s hope that it once again entices people into the adventure of literature.
