Earlier in the evening, Utrecht University, with the support of the police, called on the demonstrators to leave the courtyard of the University Library on the Drift.

‘House rules not followed’

“Partly because the house rules were not followed, serious concerns arose about safety,” said a university spokeswoman.

There is said to have been contact between the university and representatives of the activists several times. It was made clear to them from the start that they had to adhere to the house rules and leave during the evening.

Conversely, the group has shared what demands they have for the university.

Active cooperation Israel

Chairman Anton Pijpers of the Executive Board has offered several times to consult with a delegation from the group, but that offer was always refused, according to the spokeswoman.

The demonstrators report in a press release that they want the UU to terminate all active collaborations with Israeli institutions and organizations. By collaborating with Israel, the university would participate in “the oppression and occupation of the Palestinian people.” The occupiers say they will not leave until the university has severed all ties with Israel.
