She has made the confidential committee enthusiastic and convinced that with her administrative experience, strategic insight and analytical skills, she is the best candidate for mayor of Middelburg.

The council sees her as a mayor who is close to the residents and as a very dynamic and ambitious administrator who can help Middelburg further realize the administrative ambitions in the profile, for example in the field of cooperation. According to the council, she is someone who can fulfill the connecting pioneering role well.

Yvonne van Mastrigt’s administrative experience spans approximately 25 years. Around the turn of the century, she was chairman of the IJsselmonde district in Rotterdam, then mayor of Winsum and Hoogezand-Sappemeer and then deputy in the province of Groningen. In recent years she has served as mayor at various municipalities, until recently in Olst-Wijhe. Before her administrative career started, she worked for the municipal police in Rotterdam.

“I am pleasantly surprised that I can work for the municipality of Middelburg. These were good discussions with the confidential committee. I look forward to the collaboration with great enthusiasm, within the municipality and certainly also with the residents. I hope for a nice time together,” says Yvonne van Mastrigt in a first response.

Further procedure

Now that the municipal council has decided on this recommendation, the next step follows: the Minister of the Interior carries out an extensive screening. For example, the AIVD security service conducts investigations and tax investigations take place. If all this is in order, the proposal will be submitted to the Council of Ministers for appointment. This does not happen with all mayoral appointments, but because Middelburg is a provincial capital it does.

After this, the way is clear for the appointment by Royal Decree and a festive moment follows: the swearing-in of our new mayor. The King’s Commissioner swears in the new mayor on behalf of His Majesty the King. This is expected to take place on August 29.
