On Friday, May 24, the University of Groningen will award an honorary doctorate to Gerrit Hiemstra, the former meteorologist at the University of Groningen, among others. NOS News.
Hiemstra is being honored for his “exceptional achievements as an expert in the field of meteorology and (the consequences of) climate change,” the educational institution explains.
A year ago, Hiemstra announced that he would stop working as a meteorologist at NOS after 25 years. Since then he has been co-owner of Weather Impact, a company that focuses on innovative solutions in the field of weather and climate.
Hiemstra is not the only one to receive an honorary doctorate. World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, economist Mariana Mazzucato and artificial intelligence researcher Kate Crawford will also be honored.
The latter conducted research in the field of social change and media technology, specifically in the field of artificial intelligence and its impact. She is affiliated with the University of Southern California and has published articles in The New York Times.
