Here you are only allowed 90 kilometers per hour for the time being when the road is wet

--

You may have already noticed: in various places along highways in our province there are signs stating a maximum speed of 90 kilometers per hour. Normally, driving here is not allowed faster than 100 kilometers per hour during the day, or 120 or 130 kilometers per hour in the evening. The speed reduction only applies when the road surface is wet.

The measure is necessary because the seventeen road sections where the speed reduction applies are no longer rough enough. And that can endanger road safety. The speed limit will remain until January 1 next year.

The signs were already placed at the end of last year, but the measure was not officially announced before.

From 100 meters to 4 kilometers
The temporary speed reduction in Brabant has been implemented on parts of the A2, A4, A17, A27, A58, A59 and A67 motorways. In Limburg, this restriction applies in two places.

The stretches of road on which the speed has been reduced to 90 kilometers vary in length from 100 meters to 4 kilometers. When the road surface is perfect again, the signs will be removed and the usual speed limit will apply again.

A spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat explains: “The signs were placed because the road surface is insufficiently rough in those parts. The roads are still of high quality, but intensive use may cause the surface layer that provides skid resistance to wear out. This leads to less grip on the road, which in turn causes unsafe situations. As a result, the covering layer must be replaced. In the meantime, we will apply such a measure as a speed reduction.”

The nine municipalities, within the boundaries of which this change applies, and the police have been informed of the changes. It is not known whether fines have already been issued on the relevant road sections.

Objectors have until mid-June to challenge this traffic decision.
