The A12 in the direction of Utrecht will be partially or completely closed for a longer period in June due to road works. According to Rijkswaterstaat, the road is at the end of its lifespan and the road surface is in urgent need of replacement. Rijkswaterstaat then expects ‘major traffic disruption’.

The work will take place from Sunday 2 June to Monday 1 July on the A12 from The Hague towards Utrecht. The road is being renovated from Moordrecht to the Oudenrijn junction. Two of the four lanes are closed on weekdays. The entire road is closed on weekends and at night.

Speed limits apply when the road is open. Cars are then only allowed to drive at 90 kilometers per hour on the road. As a result, an extra busy rush hour is expected. There are diversions when the road is completely closed. Both scenarios result in a significant additional travel time of approximately one hour. Rijkswaterstaat says it will continue to provide information every weekend about the exact closures, expected nuisance and diversions.

Drastic measures

According to Rijkswaterstaat, such drastic measures are annoying, but necessary. The road surface cannot last much longer and there are also fears that noise standards may be exceeded. That is why the asphalt is replaced by a newer, quieter type. At the same time, some viaducts such as Strijkviertel near De Meern are being tackled. According to Rijkswaterstaat, the work should ensure that the A12 can last for years to come.

Working from home

Due to the road works and extra travel time, Rijkswaterstaat advises road users to work from home or travel together as much as possible. “This means road users who really need to get on the road can continue to use the A12.” If motorists do not temporarily adjust their driving behavior, the inconvenience can ‘increase enormously’, according to Eric Diepstraten, chief engineer and director of Rijkswaterstaat.

Rijkswaterstaat announced earlier that several highways near Utrecht will be overhauled in 2024. The A1, A2, A12, A27 and A28 near Utrecht will all be overhauled in 2024. This involves large-scale maintenance work on the A1, A2, A12, A27 and A28. There are large-scale works at the Galecopper Bridgethe road surface on the A2 is being renovated and the Leidsche Rijn Tunnel has been built new lighting got.
