De Eendracht primary school in Hansweert received an insufficient grade in a recent quality survey by the education inspectorate. Parents praise the small school for all the personal attention it provides. The school director expects to be able to quickly eliminate the insufficient grade.

Lolita van Houtvinck brengt drie zoons naar OBS De Eendracht. “Ik ben heel tevreden over De Eendracht, het is een goede school.” Ze is opgegroeid in België en woont nu in Hansweert. Haar zoons kwamen in september op de school en ze vindt de begeleiding zeer goed. Toch moet de school volgens de onderwijsinspectie verbeteren.
Achterstanden van leerlingen, onder meer in taal, moeten beter aangepakt worden, vindt de inspectie. De school heeft veel leerlingen voor wie Nederlands de tweede taal is. Ook het zicht op de ontwikkeling van de kinderen zou onder de maat zijn. De administratieve vastlegging daarover moet beter.
Mega tevreden
Jolanda Wedage, directrice van De Eendracht, zegt dat haar school met 45 leerlingen moet roeien met de riemen die ze hebben. “Ouders zijn mega tevreden en de resultaten van leerlingen zijn goed. Alle kinderen stromen uit naar vervolgonderwijs op het niveau waar ze thuishoren.” Ze is het eigenlijk niet eens met de uitslag van de inspectie. “Maar we zijn volop bezig met een plan van aanpak. We zijn overtuigd dat we met wat wijzigingen snel een prima voldoende kunnen halen.”
Wedage wil dat alle kinderen uit de buurt bij haar school onderwijs kunnen volgen dat bij hen past. “Wij hebben kinderen die slecht zien, kinderen met gedragsproblemen, kinderen voor wie Nederlands de tweede taal is, kinderen die heel goed kunnen leren en kinderen die wat minder kunnen leren. We willen niet dat ze in hokjes worden gestopt en op een of andere manier moeten we dat wel.”
Deborah Hoogendijk from Schore has daughters aged 7 and 5 at De Eendracht. “We came from Rotterdam and this school is very good. There is time and space for personal attention here, which was not there in Rotterdam.” She is not shocked if the recording of some matters at De Eendracht needs to be improved. “I come from healthcare myself. I prefer to pay more attention to people than to computers and administration.” She sees how her daughters come home from school happy and happy.

The daughters of Daniëlle Heijnen from Hansweert, aged 11 and seven, are also happy. “A small school is great. The oldest is a little behind in arithmetic, the youngest a little ahead. De Eendracht responds well to this, looks at them as individuals. “If the administration is a little less, I think that’s fine, no problem. ” Freddy Struik from Hansweert also sees the advantages of a small school that pays attention to his 6-year-old son. “Such a study is always a snapshot.”
Director Wedage mentions how her school was assessed on four points and received a failing grade on one point. That is ‘a view of development and guidance’ and that frustrates her. “We follow the children per goal very closely and more extensively than other schools.”
She thinks that the criticism has to do with its own system of monitoring students. “We want to ensure that children are not put into boxes.” Now she has been given a format to divide children into five different groups. “We are going to do that now, but it is not actually what suits us. Every child is unique and learns in their own way.”
Wedage finds the inspection report frustrating. Also because, according to her, the inspectorate does not always make it clear how things should be recorded. “For a small school, such a report is quite worrying. We are currently growing and would like to see that continue.”
