1/3 Silent journey and torches for Dustin who was stabbed to death: ‘Was a sweet boy’
Family, friends and acquaintances of sixteen-year-old Dustin, who was stabbed to death, held a silent procession on Wednesday evening. The tour started at seven o’clock from the bicycle shed at the library in Helmond, the place where the stabbing had taken place. From there the tour led to the De Watermolenwal. Flowers were laid there. About one hundred and fifty people took part in the silent procession.
“It was senseless violence,” said Chantal van Neerven, one of the organizers, prior to the march. Dustin’s father, mother and two sisters also joined the tour. The place where the stabbing took place quickly turned into a sea of flowers. Some participants in the tour even lit torches.
Chantel and her daughter Shania van Sundert found the two minutes of silence impressive. Shania was good friends with Dustin. “He didn’t deserve this. He was a helpful boy who often cycled home with me. He didn’t want girls to have to cycle home alone. He was a sweet boy,” she says.
Chantal thought the trip was a beautiful tribute to Dustin. “It was fantastic, we didn’t expect so many people. But it was also very emotional. His parents were very sad, but they also liked that there was a silent journey. They thanked us for the journey. It was a nice farewell .”
Acquaintances of each other
The stabbing happened around midnight on Tuesday at De Watermolenwal in Helmond. This was said to have preceded an argument. 16-year-old Dustin was seriously injured and died from his injuries on Wednesday morning. A twenty-year-old man from Helmond has been arrested. Both are known to each other.
The twenty-year-old man is suspected of involvement in the stabbing. It is not clear what the argument was about.
