National Mill Day in Utrecht
You can also visit windmills in Utrecht. One of these is of course Molen de Ster. This mill still has an original sawing shed, miller’s house and some wood sheds. It now houses a daycare center, an animal pasture, two studios and a music practice room. The mill is open on Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The other mill where you are welcome during the National Mill Days is Rijn en Zon on Adelaarstraat. You can visit this flour mill on Saturday, May 11 between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
There are two types of mills in the Netherlands: the polder mill and the industrial mill. Polder mills were built in the west and north of the Netherlands from the 15th century to pump away excess water. Industrial mills were used to grind grain, saw wood or extract oil from seeds.
