Ascension Day was spent usefully in the editorial office of Dagblad van het Noorden. There, a panel of beer enthusiasts considered the question ‘What is the best regional summer beer?’
Tasting sometimes seems complicated, because how do you put into words a certain smell or taste experience? Well, that’s what the beer tasting panel had Dagblad van het Noorden little effort on Thursday.
Especially as the number of beers to be tasted increased, as did the conviviality, the words flowed freely. Beer tasters do not spit out the drink like wine tasters, but sip it all away. This is necessary: you mainly taste the bitter notes in the throat.
Nine tasters
Yet it was not all fun, because the nine tasters – from complete amateur to true connoisseur, all readers of this newspaper – seriously performed their task: assessing beer. Through a scoring process, the test panel arrived at the tastiest summer beer in Drenthe and Groningen respectively. The results will be announced in a few weeks.
A selection from the large number of beer brewers in the North provided fifteen summer beers submitted, which were carefully inspected by the testers. The only criterion: the beer must be ‘nice to drink’ on a summer terrace and should therefore not be too heavy, a maximum of about 6 to 6.5 percent alcohol.
First careful steps
With this modest summer beer tasting move Dagblad van het Noorden together with the news magazines of Mediahuis Noord, his first tentative steps into the world of beer tasting, of course with a focus on Drenthe and Groningen.
