The number of burglaries in sheds, outbuildings and garages is increasing. Last year things went wrong more than 397 times in the province, an increase of 15.4 percent compared to 2022. This is evident from research by Independer based on data from the Police and CBS. The number of shed burglaries even increased by 52 incidents.

“This significant increase shows once again how important it is to properly close sheds and garages with decent locks,” says Michel Ypma, home insurance expert at Independer. “Insurers also only reimburse if the space is properly closed. If the shed door was simply open, the coverage does not apply.”
This is where the greatest chance of a shed burglary occurs

In absolute numbers, the most shed burglaries in 2023 took place in the municipality of Groningen (202), followed by Eemsdelta (34) and Oldambt and Midden-Groningen (both 31). Pekela was the municipality with the fewest barn burglaries (4).

“Burglary in a shed or cellar at the same address as your house is in principle covered by your home contents insurance. There must really be a burglary and a report must have been made to the police,” says Michel Ypma, home insurance expert at Independer.

In addition to Groningen, only barns in Utrecht (+24.9%) were much more often the target of a burglary in 2023.
