Residents of Bossche working-class district relieved: solar panels can remain in place

--

The more than 140 ‘illegal’ solar panels on the roofs of fourteen homes on Busschietersstraat in Den Bosch may remain. The good news from the municipality is the talk of the day in the working-class district De Muntel in Den Bosch. “Saves us a lot of money.”

At the beginning of April, residents with solar panels on their roofs suddenly received a letter on their doorstep. The letter from landlord BrabantWonen stated that the panels were illegal and that they therefore had to be removed. The residents were shocked, because the solar panels on Busschietersstraat were installed less than two years ago by the same BrabantWonen.

The municipality wanted the more than 140 panels to be removed, because the district is a ‘nationally protected cityscape’. This means that the municipality wants to preserve the original appearance of the neighborhood. Residents were extremely disappointed with the state of affairs, because the solar panels had actually lowered their energy bills considerably over the past two years.

“We are very happy and relieved, because without solar panels everyone has high heating costs.”

Residents were informed on Thursday via a response letter from the municipal council of Den Bosch that the municipality still wants to make an exception to legalize the panels. The municipality is already in consultation with BrabantWonen about a ‘customized approach’.

Resident Wilma has lived in the street almost all her life and is relieved that the solar panels can remain on her roof. “Without solar panels, everyone has extremely high heating costs. Paying an additional 1,200 euros every year was normal for me, while this year I received 600 euros back for the first time.”

“Many residents had already replaced their gas stove.”

Mehmet also lives in Busschietersstraat. He is happy that the residents have been heard. “Many neighbors had already replaced their gas stove with an electric hob to burn as little gas as possible. If the solar posts had had to be removed, it would have cost me a few hundred euros a year.”

According to residents, one house is exempt from legalization. The six panels on the roof of a house on Rietpolderplein must be removed. According to the municipality, this house does have ‘monumental’ status.
