Neighbors heard two bangs on Saturday evening, but do not know where they came from. “The next afternoon, the police find two dead people in their home in Nieuwediep,” say reporters Willem Groeneveld and Sander Dekker in our crime podcast Radio Ramkraak.

The dead are the owner of Wereldgeluk restaurant in Groningen and her partner. It is unclear what happened, but it is clear that things have not gone well for either of them in recent years.
After a tip about the couple, reporter Willem Groeneveld heads to Nieuwediep, a small village on the border of Groningen and Drenthe. “The neighbors said that on Sunday afternoon around two o’clock the first police cars arrived with sirens. From that moment on it was a coming and going of vans and men in white suits,” says Willem.
The matter is sensitive and that is why Dagblad van het Noorden and Sikkom reported on the events in a businesslike manner. “Last January the man stood before the police judge. He had been in custody since August for assaulting and threatening his wife,” says Sander Dekker.
The woman has been the owner of Wereldgeluk restaurant in Groningen since 2022: “It is not the most attractive restaurant in Groningen, it is located on an industrial estate and uses an all you can eat formula,” says Willem. After the takeover, the restaurant turned out to be full of hidden defects. The repair costs would be approximately one million euros. Money is raised from family, friends and through crowdfunding.
A lawsuit is also scheduled for later this month to get some of that money back from the previous owner. “We also received a video from the surveillance camera. It shows that the old owner was expelled from the restaurant by the police at the beginning of this year,” says Willem.
