Today 12:00 noon – Klaas van der Horst

FrieslandCampina confirms this. Many members have already been recruited internally, but more members can register until May 15. Their milk is supplied to food giant Mars, among others, which is rolling out a global climate program in which Fonterra, Land O’Lakes, DMK, Interfood and the Polish Mlekovita also participate. Other companies are also interested in FrieslandCampina’s extra climate-friendly milk.

In the start-up phase of the FrieslandCampina program, the focus is on measures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Biodiversity measures may also be added in the future.

Internally, FrieslandCampina calls the project ‘the Development Group’. Milk valorization is based on mass balance. There is therefore no question of a special milk flow. However, contracts can be concluded with customers in the background, such as with Mars.

These companies also have a reporting obligation, just like FrieslandCampina. To achieve this, agreements must be made about emission reductions.

FrieslandCampina customers do not know who is in their supplier group and members also do not know to which customer they are linked. However, a ‘data match’ does take place.

Certainty until 2030
Participating member dairy farmers sign an agreement for participation for two years: 2024 and 2025. After that, the contract will be tacitly extended every year until the end of 2030. This is important for customers, because they then have the certainty that they can achieve emission reductions in the long term. claim.

This year, 2024, participants will receive a fixed starting amount of €250 and will also receive €25 per kilo of Bovaer fed. The compensation of €25 is to cover the costs of the Bovaer and to appreciate member dairy farmers for participation, costs and effort. The amount of the fixed contribution and the variable contribution per measure will be redetermined every calendar year and will be based on the current state of affairs.

FrieslandCampina does not indicate how large the ‘development group’ should be, or what the possible additional compensation is.
