Joost Klein has managed to get a coveted place in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest with his song “Europapa”. There he will compete on Saturday, May 11, 2024, against Spain, which this year sent Nebulossa’s controversial song “Zorra” to Sweden. But while the Netherlands and Belgium have to compete every year to get a place, Spain is always in the final by default. But why is that so?

Belgium, but the Netherlands, did not manage to secure a place in the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The Netherlands will be the fifth country on stage in Malmö on Saturday evening, May 11. Spain was awarded eighth place to make their representation heard by the public and the jury.

Spain never has to participate in semi-finals because as a ‘big’ European country they are always in the finals, and that is a good thing, because otherwise they would sometimes not get further than the preliminary rounds.

Spain always participates every year as a participant of one of the major European (paying?) countries that are always in the final, just like Great Britain, France, Germany and Italy. Spain therefore always has the possibility of winning the Eurovision Song Contest, something that has rarely happened.

Spain has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest every year since 1961 for more than 50 years. The country managed to win the festival twice in all those years, namely in 1968 with Massiel’s song “La, la, la” and in 1969 Salomé with the song “Vivo Cantando”. However, this last victory had to be shared with the Netherlands, France and Great Britain.
