A week after issuing the permit to shoot a non-shy wolf with a paintball gun, not a paintball has been fired. A spokesperson for the province of Gelderland informed NU.nl on Friday that there are five hunters ready.
The wolf has been seen for a number of weeks in the northern part of the Veluwe, mainly around Ermelo. Images on social media showed the animal hanging around cars.
According to the spokesperson, there is no continuous search for the wolf, now that a permit has been issued to shoot the animal with a paintball gun. However, five hunters are ready to take action if there is a report about the not-shy wolf.
But so far there have been no reports. It is important that the wolf realizes that the paintball bullets were shot by a human. This would cause the animal to associate pain with people and thus become afraid again.
Wednesday’s court hearing on the matter
The Fauna Protection Society has filed summary proceedings against the decision to shoot paint bullets at the wolf. The organization believes it has not been proven that shooting paintball bullets has a deterrent effect. The judge will consider the issue on Wednesday.
Until then, the province will continue to shoot colorless paint bullets as necessary. According to the spokesperson, the social importance is too great to wait.

Long legal battle before
At the beginning of this year, the judge gave permission to shoot a non-shy wolf with a paintball gun on De Hoge Veluwe. The ruling followed a legal battle lasting more than a year. The judge then had Gelderland to provide better arguments several times as to why the shooting was necessary.
After the ruling, the granted permit was only valid for a week. There have also been no reports of the non-shy wolf for some time. No paint ball was ever shot then.
