Lectures

ZEIST Impressionist portrait art by John Singer Sargent and the associated fashion of the 19th century ‘parisiennes’ will be discussed by Mirelle Nunes of Kunst uit Zeist in an extensive lecture at the Walkartcentrum Zeist on Thursday, May 16 at 10:00 am. Participation costs €14.95. Information and registration: www.kunstuitzeist.nl or T.06-50489752.

The American painter John Singer Sargent (Florence 1856 – London 1925) was best known for his portraits, but also landscapes. He had an enormous oeuvre: in total he made approximately 900 oil paintings, 2000 watercolors and countless sketches and charcoal drawings. Until July 7, 2024, Tate Britain (London) is showing an overview of his works in combination with the clothing of the subjects.
The ‘Van Dyck of the 20th century’. His nickname refers to the Flemish portrait painter of the English court in the 17th century, Anthony Van Dyck. The striking parallel between the two painters will be further explained during the lecture on the basis of the many portraits that Singer Sargent made.
Singer Sargent developed his own style; realistic, a bit crude and experimenting with impressionistic techniques. So quick paint strokes to investigate light effects and color in a sketch-like method.

PORTRAITS OF RICH LADIES

Singer Sargent painted the so-called ‘parisiennes’, a new type of woman with refined, elegant manners, who used her beauty and other abilities to rise up in the Parisian beau monde. His work caused quite a stir when exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1884.

READING OF THE MONTH OF MAY

This time Mirelle Nunes will not discuss a current exhibition in the Netherlands, but will provide a musical insight into the time of the impressionism of John Singer Sargent and his followers (including Vincent van Gogh).

The lecture will be held on Thursday, May 16 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am in the Walkartcentrum at Kerkweg 19 in Zeist. The entrance fee is € 14.95 pp (incl. coffee/tea). If you are unable to come to the hall on May 16, Mirelle offers you an online replay link for €10.
